GDOT Notifies Monroe County of Hwy. 18 Bridge Replacement

The Georgia Department of Transportation notified Monroe County this week that it intends to replace the Hwy. 18 bridge over the Ocmulgee River that connects Monroe and Jones counties.

In a letter to Monroe County Manager Jim Hedges, GDOT Bridge Program Manager Sean Pharr proposed to close the bridge during the construction and replacement for a period of 12 to 18 months.

Monroe County has one month (until July 11) to address any concerns about the proposed project with GDOT.

During the time the bridge is out of operation, travelers seeking to go from Forsyth to Gray would be detoured south down Hwy. 87 through Macon and then northeast onto U.S. Hwy. 129 (Gray Highway).

No timetable was given in the letter as to when the proposed bridge replacement project would begin.
